Origin and history
Saint-Mendé church (or Saint-Ménelé) in Saint-Maulvis, in the Somme department in the Hauts-de-France region, is a religious building built in the 16th century. It is distinguished by its imposing tower, typical of the picard ecclesiastical architecture of this time. The bell tower was protected as historical monuments by order of 19 February 1926, while the entire church was inscribed on 29 August 2022.
The church houses several classified works of art, including a 15th century buffet, a statue of Saint Adrien and stone baptismal fonts dating from the 16th century. Other remarkable elements include a polychrome wooden statue of St.Antoine Ermite, a reliquary Eucharistic suspension of St.Fiacre (17th century), as well as wooden statuettes representing Faith and Justice. These objects illustrate the artistic and religious evolution of the region between the 15th and 17th centuries.
The building, built of stone, is representative of the rural churches of Picardie, with a robust structure and a bell tower overlooking the village. Its recent inscription (2022) as a historic monument in its entirety bears witness to its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its furniture. The precise location of the church is attested at 4 Rue de l'Eglise in Saint-Maulvis, in a preserved rural setting.
The Saint-Mendé church is part of the communal property and is part of the Somme's historical monuments landscape. Its history is documented in the Mérimée and Clochers de France bases, emphasizing its importance in the local architectural and religious heritage. The progressive protection of its elements (closing in 1926, then the whole in 2022) reflects an increasing recognition of its historical value.
