Origin and history
The church of Saint-Michel de Condé-en-Barrois, located in the commune of Hauts-de-Chée (Meuse, Grand Est), is a religious building built between the late 12th century and the 13th century. It illustrates the architectural transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles, with characteristic elements of these two periods. This monument reflects the evolution of medieval construction techniques in the region.
The church underwent major changes in the 18th century, including the reconstruction of the upper part of its tower. In the 19th century, some additional adjustments were made, partially adapting the building to the liturgical and structural needs of the time. These changes reflect current practices of restoration and adaptation of rural churches in France.
In terms of heritage, Saint Michael's Church was listed as a historic monument in 1989, and was classified in 1994. This double protection concerns both the building itself and the walls of private enclosures located in the eastern part of the adjoining cemetery. These measures underline its historical and architectural importance for local and regional heritage.
Like many rural churches in Lorraine, this monument has played a central role in community life, serving as a place of worship, gathering and identity marker for the inhabitants. Its mixed architecture, typical of the transition periods, offers a tangible example of the cultural and religious dynamics of the medieval and modern Meuse.
