Origin and history

The church Saint-Michel de Montels, located about 2 km south of Montpellier, is a 12th century religious building. Initially a rural parish dependent on the cathedral chapter of Maguelone and then Montpellier, it illustrates the medieval ecclesiastical organization in Languedoc. Its architecture, marked by a single vaulted nave, underwent major changes, including the replacement of a cradle vault by a false brick vault in 1759. A crypt, located under the first span, and a wall added between spans at an indefinite time testify to its structural evolution.

During the Old Regime, Montels remained a rural parish until the Revolution, when the church was sold as a national property in 1795. In the 17th century, arrangements were made to house him serving him: a bedroom on the ground floor built in 1663, then a dwelling on two floors from 1684. These additions reflect the adaptation of religious buildings to the practical needs of local communities, between worship and daily life.

Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 27 August 1927, the Saint-Michel church preserves traces of its medieval and modern past. Its inscription protects an architectural heritage representative of Occitan rural churches, marked by transformations related to the social and religious history of the region, from the Romanesque to the revolutionary period.
