Origin and history

The Saint-Michel de Montpascal church, located in the commune of Pontamafrey-Montpascal (near La Tour-en-Maurienne), was built in the early eighteenth century. Its architecture is distinguished by a unique nave composed of four vaulted spans of ridges, supported by doric pilasters. The first span houses a stand, while the natural lighting comes from five windows pierced in the south wall. The interior, richly decorated with frescoes, bears witness to an artistic heritage preserved despite successive changes.

The building has undergone several modifications over the centuries, notably as a result of fires that required restoration. Despite these hazards, its interior decor remained particularly rich and coherent. The church was fully listed in the Historic Monuments by order of 4 November 2015, thus recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the commune and remains an emblematic place of the Maurian valley.
