The church of Saint-Michel and the foreground, in whole, situated on Parcel C 118 and OC 116: inscription by order of 22 December 2023
Origin and history
The Saint-Michel church, listed as a Historic Monument, is located in a parish enclosure accessible by an open foredoor to the west. Its architecture consists of a single vessel, flanked to the north by two edicles (a sacristy and baptismal fonts), and extended to the west by a large porch in the hemicycle. This porch, originally designed for defensive purposes, presents murderers attesting to this primitive military function. The building, built in the 12th century, underwent major transformations in the 14th, 18th and 19th centuries, reflecting its architectural and liturgical evolution over time.
The front porch and the church itself, located on plots C 118 and OC 116, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 22 December 2023. The property belongs to the commune of Saint-Michel-Escalus, in the department of Landes (region New Aquitaine). The porch, a remarkable element, combines a monumental entrance and a defensive role, characteristic of the fortified rural churches of this period. Subsequent changes, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries, reflect adaptations to parish needs and changing aesthetic standards.
The location of the church, specified as "passable" (note 5/10), places the building at approximately 36 Castets Road, in a rural setting marked by medieval history of the Landes. Its parish enclosure, typical of the Aquitaine villages, highlights its anchoring in local community and religious life. Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its status as a protected building, open to visit under communal responsibility.
