Origin and history
The church of Saint-Michel de Castéra-Loubix, classified as a Historical Monument in 1973, presents a basilical plan with a unique nave and hemicircular bedside, typical of the religious buildings of the High Middle Ages. Its walls, built of pebbles arranged in ears and reinforced with brick chains, are supported by three foothills on the abside. A later porch protects the entrance, while the circular choir houses 15th century frescoes illustrating the Passion of Christ, from the Last Judgment to the Resurrection. These murals, made around 1490-1520, bear witness to medieval late religious art in the region.
The church, of pre-Roman origin, underwent major modifications in the 16th century, including its portal, and in the 18th century with the addition of a southern side chapel, sacristy, two windows, and a renewed structure. These transformations reflect the evolution of liturgical and aesthetic needs from the early Middle Ages to the modern era. The combination of techniques (rock apparatus, bricks, foothills) and epochs (Gothic paints, classical elements) makes it a remarkable example of architectural stratigraphy in New Aquitaine.
Owned by the commune of Castéra-Loubix (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), the building is located at 5060 Rue du Centre, in a rural setting marked by a geographical precision deemed "passable" (note 5/10). Its classification in 1973 highlights its heritage value, linked both to its seniority (XII century), its exceptional painted decorations, and its historical role in local community life. Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its status as a parish church, without specifying its current use (visits, cultual, etc.).
