Church (Box AE 100): Registration by Order of 5 July 1927
Origin and history
The Saint-Nazaire church of Azay-le-Ferron is a Catholic religious building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Indre, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Built in the 12th century, it is distinguished by a nave originally designed to accommodate a series of domes, an ambitious but unfinished architectural project. The supports and sculpture of this church show a stylistic advance compared to the other dome churches of the region, although the original plan was finally abandoned to the benefit of Gothic vaults, characterized by square-sectioned warheads adorned with a boudin.
The building has been listed as historic monuments since 5 July 1927, recognizing its heritage value. It is administratively dependent on the archdiocese of Bourges, the dean of Brenne-Touraine, and the parish of Mézières-en-Brenne. Located in the natural region of Brenne, west of Indre, the church occupies a central place in the local landscape, both religiously and architecturally. Its official address, registered in the Merimée base, is the Place de Verdun, although an approximate location is also located at 5 Rue de l'Église.
The church property belongs to the municipality of Azay-le-Ferron. Its architectural history reflects a transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles, typical of many religious constructions of this period in France. Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its importance in local heritage, while noting that some information, such as the exact accuracy of its location, remains perfectable according to contemporary assessments.
