Origin and history

The Church of Saint-Nicolas d'Angy, located in the Oise (Hauts-de-France), is a religious building marking the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles. Founded in the late 10th or early 11th century according to tradition, it is associated with Adelaide d'Aquitaine, wife of Hugues Capet, although its present nave dates from the first half of the 12th century. The north side, the transept, the bell tower and the choir, built between 1150 and 1160, illustrate the emergence of the Gothic, with arches of warheads and a bedside with cut strips, architectural innovations for the time.

Ranked a historic monument in 1862, the church is known for its bell tower, one of the first Gothic style in the region, and its bedside, among the oldest examples of cut strips. These elements, never revised, make it a rare testimony of medieval architecture. The nave, of archaic simplicity, and the later north side, reflect the rural constructive techniques of Beauvais. The furniture includes notable pieces such as a 12th century Romanesque bentier and a statue of the Virgin with the Child from the 15th or 16th century.

The history of the church is linked to that of Angy, formerly a county capital under the Capetians, and then declining after the Hundred Years War. The nearby Saint-Clair source attracted pilgrims for its therapeutic virtues, and a chapel dedicated to Saint Clair was located there. The building, closed in 2006 for safety reasons, benefited from a major restoration completed in 2016, giving life to this exceptional heritage.

The oriental parts, made of cut stone, show a careful decoration: cornices beauvaisines, carved modillons, and windows in the middle of the hanger. The elegant and innovative bell tower features broken arched bays and a rosette, while the interior reveals primitive warhead vaults and capitals with varied patterns. Croisillons, asymmetrical, contain peculiarities such as a hemicircular niche and an integrated stairwell.

The classified furniture includes, in addition to the bentier and the Virgin with the Child, statues from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including a Saint Clair cephalophore and a Saint Nicholas. These works, as well as the 18th century eagle-lutrin, testify to the artistic richness of the building. The church, now attached to the parish of Sainte-Claire de Mouy, remains an active place of worship and a symbol of local heritage.
