Origin and history

Saint-Nicolas de Rouvroy-sur-Serre Church is a Catholic religious building located in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region. Built of wood in 1828, this small and rectangular church was financed by a voluntary subscription of the inhabitants. Its history is marked by its initial status as a chapel, dependent on the chapter of Rozoy and the bishop of Laon.

Prior to the French Revolution, the parish of Rouvroy was served by a vicar or canon of Rozoy. The chapel Saint-Nicolas, then simple religious dependence, had land and income estimated at 136 pounds and 6 floors in 1729. These goods were later gathered at the Rozoy chapter factory by Jean-Nicolas Cluet, parish priest of Thierville and chaplain of Saint-Nicolas.

The present church, rebuilt in 1828, probably replaces an older building. Its modest wooden architecture reflects the limited resources of the local community at that time. It is part of the landscape of the fortified churches of Thiérache, although its status as a chapel and then as a parish church distinguishes it from the more imposing buildings of the region.
