Origin and history

The church of Saint-Nicolas de Tremolat, located in the Dordogne department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is an emblematic monument of the perigordine Romanesque architecture of the 12th century. His story dates back to a local legend combining Saint Cybard (Eparchius), a solitary Angoulême, whose home was reportedly close to the building. According to medieval sources, the church was destroyed in the 8th century by the Saracens, then rebuilt under Charlemagne as a Conventual Priory dedicated to Saint Mary, enriched by relics like the shirt of the Child Jesus.

In the 11th century, a carpented nave was erected, while the three domes of the nave and the transept date from the mid-12th century, followed by the western bell tower. The fortified building underwent modifications in the 18th century, including the addition of a classical gate and a pediment on its façade. The church, which was briefly occupied by the Protestant troops of Turenne in 1587, was threatened with demolition in 1687 by its state of degradation.

Ranked a historic monument in 1913, Saint-Nicolas Church has undergone numerous restorations, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries, to preserve its roofs, domes and bell tower. Its imposing dimensions (46 m long, domes at 11.30 m high) and its rich history, linked to the Abbey of Saint-Cybard d'Angoulême, make it a major testimony of the religious and architectural heritage of the Périgord.

The excavations and works of the eighteenth century revealed medieval paintings in the choir, now protected. The building, owned by the commune, also preserves an 18th century altar classified since 1976. Its architecture, with staggered foothills and cradle vaults, illustrates the ingenuity of the Romanesque builders to ensure the stability of the whole.

The legend of St.Cybard and the Carolingian acts, although partially reshaped, underline the spiritual and historical importance of Tremolat, a place of pilgrimage and religious power from the early Middle Ages. The chronicles of Adémar de Chabannes and the archives of the Abbey of Saint-Cybard document its central role in the region, between Angoulême and Périgord.

Finally, modern restorations, such as those carried out by Henri Rapine in 1920 or the consolidations of the bell tower in 1938, show a constant desire to preserve this heritage, while adapting the building to contemporary cultural and tourist needs.
