Origin and history

Saint-Orens de Maubec Church, located in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in Occitanie, is a Catholic building dating back to the late 15th century. It is distinguished by its masonry porch, opened by three ogival bays, and its Renaissance portal adorned with carved triglyphs and metopes. This monument, with an extended single nave of a polygonal bedside, bears witness to a turbulent history, marked by successive destruction and reconstruction, notably after the fire of 1590 by the Protestants, followed by a restoration in 1595.

Maubec, the only parish of Tarn-et-Garonne attached to the diocese of Lombez, occupied a strategic position on the Roman route from Toulouse to Lectoure. The church, partially classified as a Historic Monument since 1955 and 1986, underwent major changes in the 19th and 20th centuries. Among these were the elevation of the nave walls in 1841, the construction of a vault in 1878 (consolidated in 1919), and a new construction campaign in 1920. The porch, originally designed to support a bell tower never finished, is backed by a sprocket wall acting as a bell tower.

Inside, the nave is flanked by four side chapels, two to the west and two to the east. The warheads of the vaults rest on carved cloves representing fantastic animals, bats and sirens, adding an artistic and symbolic dimension to the building. The architectural transformations, such as the resumption of the walls or the modification of the covers between 1838 and 1924, reflect the successive adaptations of the church to the liturgical and structural needs of the local community.

The church of Saint-Orens thus embodies a rich religious and historical heritage, marked by late Gothic influences and renaissance. Its gate, classified among the protected elements, illustrates Renaissance art with its triangular pediment supported by harsh pilasters. The movable objects referenced in the Palissy base and the protections under the Historic Monuments underline its cultural and architectural importance in the Occitanie region.
