Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pantaléon de Troyes, mentioned in 1189, was initially a branch of the parish of Saint John, under the supervision of the abbesse of Notre-Dame-aux-Nonnais. Its stone reconstruction was decided in 1516, but a fire in 1524 ravaged the building under construction, accelerating its restructuring until 1536. Work resumed in 1660 to enhance the choir and roofs, while the Doric Gate was added between 1735 and 1745. Ranked a historical monument in 1862, it illustrates the architectural evolution between late Gothic and classicism.

The chapel of Saint-Jacques, rebuilt in 1538 for Nicole le Tartier (widow of Mayor Jacques Dorigny), houses a altarpiece decorated with biblical scenes such as Esther and Ahasuerus or Judith and Holopherne. Its stained glass and coat of arms remind the sponsors. The church, rectangular plan (37.6 m long, 18.9 m wide), vaulted at 28 m, mixes 16th century stones and subsequent developments, including a remarkable Champagne statuary such as the Crepin and Crepinian Arrestation, an ancient piece of ropes.

The building was led by several masters: Jean Bailly initiated the stone reconstruction, followed by Maurice Favereau (from 1527) and Antoine Dumay for the north nave (1531–1533). The façade was redesigned in 1645, and the Doric Gate, added in the 18th century, completed its present appearance. Located between the cathedral and the train station, bordered by the streets Turenne and the Marché-aux-Noix, the church remains a major testimony of the Troyan religious heritage, marked by fires, reconstructions and successive artistic influences.
