Origin and history

Saint-Pathus Church, located in Saint-Pathus, Seine-et-Marne, is a religious building dating back to the twelfth century. It initially depended on the abbey of Molesme and has an unusual architectural style for the region, strongly inspired by Burgundian art. The flat bedside choir, the two square chapels and the transept, built after 1102, illustrate this influence. Between 1130 and 1160, two spans of the nave and collateral were added, with Burgundy techniques such as the breakage of double arches and richly carved capitals.

Between 1872 and 1900, the church underwent a complete restoration, including the addition of a porch. This 19th century work marked a second key period in its architectural history. The building, registered as a historical monument in 2007, is now owned by the municipality of Saint-Pathus. Its inscription covers the entire structure, including the interior and exterior elements, reflecting its heritage importance.

The technical peculiarities of the church, such as the counter-start of the nave cradle by the collaterals, testify to an advanced architectural know-how for the time. The capitals of the first spans, finely worked, add a remarkable artistic dimension. These elements, combined with its turbulent history, make Saint-Pathus Church a significant example of medieval religious heritage in Île-de-France.
