Origin and history
The church Saint-Paxent de Nozières, classified as a Historical Monument, has its origins in the second half of the 11th century or in the first quarter of the 12th century. Its initial construction reflects the Romanesque architecture of the time, with a nave opening to the east by a gate in the middle of the hangar surmounted by a fixed cross. This portal preserves traces of an ancient archvolt decorated with billets, a decorative element typical of the period. The building thus illustrates the stylistic transitions between Romanesque and Gothic, although its nave remains marked by still Romanesque forms.
In the 13th century, major changes transformed the church: the choir, the bedside and the bell tower were built or rebuilt, introducing Gothic elements as a dogive vault resting on corbelled columns. These columns are supported by carved cul-de-lampe heads, a remarkable architectural detail. Outside, the bedside is reinforced by triangular foothills, a rare arrangement that highlights the originality of the monument. The bell tower, covered with slates (a posterior addition), houses a belfry with a 14th century bell, testifying to the sustainability of the place of worship.
The church Saint-Paxent thus embodies centuries of religious and architectural history, from its Romanesque foundations to its Gothic additions. Its classification in 1971 (inscription in the inventory of Historic Monuments) protects a heritage where rural simplicity and medieval refinement blend. The accuracy of its location remains moderate (level 6/10), but its official address places it 18200 Nozières, in the department of Cher, in the region Centre-Val de Loire.
