Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pé de Saleich, located in the village of the same name in Haute-Garonne, is a 16th century religious building. It is distinguished by its portal, classified as Historical Monument since 1926, which illustrates architectural and sculptural know-how typical of the Renaissance. This portal, the only protected element, shows particular attention to decorative details, with mouldings, pinnacles and spiral patterns.
The church gate features a rectangular bay framed by a lintel and pedestals decorated with angular mouldings and gorges. The angles between the lintel and the pedestals are rounded, and the whole is flanked by two pilasters topped with hooked pinnacles. These pilasters house niches and are crowned by dais formed by a pile of small pinnacles. The tympanum, in a curved arch, is decorated with hooks and a central flower, with a niche and a dais in its middle. The caps, on the other hand, represent winged heads, adding a symbolic dimension to the whole.
The exact address of the church, according to Merimée data, is the 16 Chemin de Lano Heredo in Saleich, in the department of Haute-Garonne. Although the GPS location is approximate (accuracy noted 5/10), the building remains a local heritage point of interest. Owned by the municipality, its portal, registered in the inventory of Historical Monuments, constitutes a major artistic and architectural heritage for the Occitanie region, reflecting the stylistic influences of its time.
