Origin and history

Saint-Bénigne d'Épagny Church, now called Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens, is a Catholic church in the village of Épagny, Côte-d'Or. Its origin dates back to the 14th century, with a first parish church dedicated to Saint-Bénigne, built at the beginning of this period. This site is linked to an ancient tradition: according to legend, Saint-Bénigne, fleeing the Roman persecutions, had fled to Épagny in 177 before being captured there by Terence, governor of Burgundy, and led to martyrdom.

The first church, which became too small and deteriorated, was rebuilt in 1840. The current building is characterized by a single nave oriented, a flat bedside and a square porch hatch to the west. Among its remarkable elements, the tympanum of the southern side door, dated the fourteenth century, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 5 March 1970. This tympanum is the only protected element of the church, bearing witness to its medieval architectural heritage.

Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens Church plays a central role in local life, both religious and heritage. Its sober architecture and its history linked to Saint-Bénigne make it an emblematic monument of Épagny. The reconstruction of the 19th century preserved its cultural use while integrating elements inherited from the medieval building, as evidenced by the classified tympanum.
