Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens de Clérey, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building built in part in the 12th century. It is distinguished by its absence of transept and its chapel dedicated to Mary, added in the sixteenth century. Its furniture includes notable works such as a 15th century polychrome wooden altarpiece depicting biblical scenes, as well as polychrome limestone statues from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a painted ceiling depicting saints and angels.
The church was once a parish of the Grand Dean of Troyes, with Fresnoy as a branch until 1725. His cure depended on the abbey of Montiéramey. The Notre Dame Chapel, founded in 1349 by Geoffroi, Lord of Clérey, bears witness to its local historical importance. Ranked a historic monument in 1926, it now belongs to the commune and retains a significant artistic and architectural heritage.
The building, registered by decree of 7 May 1926, is located at 18 Rue de l'Église in Clérey. Its furniture, including statues such as those of St.Antoine, St.James the Major and St.Savine, as well as liturgical elements, reflects stylistic and religious developments between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, and its current state remains linked to its community and heritage use.
