Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens-et-Saint-Étienne de Brignancourt, located in Val-d Built from the end of the 11th century, it consists of an un vaulted nave, a choir of two spans finished with a flat bedside, and a south crusillon added at the end of the 13th or early 14th century. The latter, as the basis for an unfinished bell tower, illustrates successive architectural adaptations. The southern gate, adorned with broken sticks and a gridded tympanum, as well as the beautiful cornice of the choir and the bell tower, are among its most remarkable elements.

The nave, of Romanesque origin, preserves four monolithic and simple ebrasing lintel windows, while the choir has neat dogid vaults, with original capitals at the corners of the bedside. A double-basin liturgical swimming pool, dated from the 1220s, and a clogged arcade to the north testify to its liturgical evolution. Ranked a historic monument in 1910, the church underwent several restoration campaigns, notably under Gabriel Ruprich-Robert (1920–1923) and Jules Formigé (1927–1930), who preserved or reconstructed missing elements.

The history of the parish, mentioned in 1161, reveals its successive connection to the archdioceses of Rouen and then Versailles after the Revolution, before joining the diocese of Pontoise in 1966. Today affiliated with the parish of Averns and Marines, the church hosts Sunday Masses three times a year. Its classified furniture, including a 14th century Virgin with Child and a 13th century funeral slab, enriches its heritage.

The bell tower, square but incomplete, reflects the structural challenges of its construction, with a single floor and flat foothills. Its absence of a stone arrow is explained by the corbellation of the walls, compromising its stability. On the outside, the north wall of the nave, in stone without foothills, contrasts with the renovated south wall, marked by Gothic additions and modern restorations.

The southern crusillon, a late addition of radiant style, houses a large bay with characteristic reamping, announcing the flamboyant style. Its interior, vaulted dogives, communicates with the nave through a Berrichon passage and with the choir through a rough arcade. The hors-oeuvre stairwell, a neo-Gothic appearance, and the double-basket liturgical pool, rare by its foliage console, highlight the diversity of the periods represented.

Finally, the furniture includes polychrome statues from the 14th and 16th centuries, including a sculpted group representing St Peter liberated by an angel, with reference to the church's term. These elements, combined with a 13th century funerary slab and a bell of 1758, testify to the historical and artistic richness of this rural monument, anchored in the landscape of the French Vexin.
