Origin and history

Saint-Pierre d'Artonges Church is a religious building located in the delegated commune of Artonges, in Dhuys and Morin-en-Brie, in the department of Aisne. Built mainly in the 15th century, it preserves notable architectural and artistic elements, such as 16th century stained glass windows in the choir and stone baptismal fonts dating also from the 15th century. The building underwent renovations in the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, particularly at the nave and gate level.

The church transept, dating from the 15th century, is one of the oldest and best preserved parts. The building also houses an altar-table-tubernacle and an eighteenth-century pulpit, testimonies of stylistic and liturgical developments of the time. Enlisted as historical monuments in 1928, the church was the object of restoration campaigns, notably for its stained glass windows in 1983 and general works in 1993.

Saint-Pierre Church, owned by the commune, is an example of the rural religious heritage of Hauts-de-France. Its architecture and furniture illustrate the artistic and religious practices of the region, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era. The location of the building, on Rue Principale d'Artonges, makes it a central point of the village, both historically and communityally.
