Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre d'Éraville is a Catholic monument located in the Charente department in New Aquitaine. Mainly from the second half of the 12th century, it underwent modifications in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, with a unique nave and a semicircular apse decorated with blind arcades. The western gate, modified or redone in the 13th century, presents sculptures and columns with capitals, while remains of archatures remain on the south wall.

The building was listed as historic monuments on May 31, 1965. It probably replaces an older building, as evidenced by re-used sculptures, perhaps from the Merovingian or Carolingian era. The nave, covered with a wooden ceiling, was raised at an indefinite time, and restorations took place between 1857 and 1866 under the direction of architect Raymond, with entrepreneur Albert. The façade, dated the last third of the 12th century, was restored in the 17th century.

The church is distinguished by its bell tower and its simple plan, typical of the rural buildings of the region. The carved capitals of the apse windows and the columns surrounding the gate reflect a neat craft. Ancient decorative elements, such as the five arches above the cornice, have partially disappeared or been transformed during successive reconstructions. Today, the monument belongs to the commune of Éraville and remains a testimony of the religious architectural evolution in Charente.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its local heritage importance. The exact address, 1 Chemin de Saint-Pierre à Éraville (16120 Bellevigne), and its Insee code (16204) confirm its territorial anchoring in the former Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine. The accuracy of its location is estimated as satisfactory a priori, with GPS coordinates allowing it to be located southeast of the village.
