Origin and history
Saint-Pierre d'Igny Church, located in the Essonne department in Île-de-France, is a Catholic parish church dedicated to Saint Pierre. Its origin dates back to the early 13th century, when the current tower of the bell tower was built as a watchtower for the fortified farm of Amblainvilliers. Shortly afterwards, during the reign of Philip Augustus, a place of worship was erected and dedicated to the apostle Peter, symbolizing attachment to the papacy. This first building was partially destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, when British troops ravaged the area.
In the 15th century, the church was rebuilt in a Romanesque style by the local lords, the Du Puys family, who also restored the damage suffered. In the 18th century, the crypt of the seigneurs' burials was filled, and the façade was renovated at that time. The building was officially listed as a historic monument on February 17, 1950, before undergoing further restoration in 1967, including the addition of an altar.
Architecturally, the church features a vaulted nave in a crib, two sidewalks crossed with warheads, and a flat bedside. The bell tower, located on the north facade, retains 13th century defensive elements and is surmounted by a clock. Inside, a 16th-century wooden sculpture depicts the Virgin with the Child, while arch keys and friezes bear the arms of the Du Puys family. A chapel dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament was added on the southern facade.
Today, Saint Peter's Church remains a testimony to the medieval and modern history of Igny, mixing religious, defensive and seigneurial functions. Its inscription in historical monuments and its successive restorations underline its heritage importance in the francilian region.
