Origin and history
The church of Saint Peter d'Oust-Marest, located in the Somme department in Picardie Maritime, is a Catholic building built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Its sober architecture combines chalk for foundations and brick for the high parts, reflecting the local techniques of medieval times. The blind facade, pierced by a gate framed by foothills, supports a bell tower overlooking the whole, characteristic of the rural churches of the region.
Inside, the church retains remarkable heritage elements. Alay at the tomb of the first quarter of the sixteenth century, classified as a historical monument since 1907, represents Christ surrounded by biblical figures such as the Virgin or Nicodemus. Restored in 2006, this sculpture illustrates Renaissance religious art. The tombstone of Raoul d'Aoust (died 1269), adorned with its effigy in mesh and its epitaph, bears witness to the importance of local lords in the Middle Ages. A Christ on the Cross of the 16th century completes this liturgical furniture.
The building, of great structural simplicity with a unique vessel encompassing nave and choir, embodies the modest religious architecture of the Picardy countryside. Its awnings covering the foothills and mixed use of materials (stone, brick) underline an adaptation to the available resources. Historical references, such as those of Robert de Guyencourt in La Picardie historique et monumentale (1904-1906), anchor his study in regional works on Christian heritage.
