Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre de Bazus, located in the Haute-Garonne department in Occitanie, has its origins before 1185, when a first church dedicated to Saint Peter already existed. The village was then under the seigneury of the Prior of Saint Peter as early as 1232. The current building, built in the 15th century and redesigned in the 18th century, is built in the Toulouse Gothic style. It rests on the foundations of the old church and houses medieval burials.
The architecture is characterized by a unique nave preceded by a typical Languedoc bell tower, accompanied by a pepper turret. Inside, the Gothic rib vault is decorated with paints in grey and gold according to the Albigoise tradition, representing characters wrapped in d-acanthe rinsels on a blue background. The choir, with three cut strips, has a studded decor and carved woodwork inspired by antiquity.
Ranked a historic monument since December 29, 1978, the church illustrates the religious and artistic heritage of the region. Its protected elements include the structure itself (cadastre A 375), property of the municipality of Bazus. The site, open to the visit, reflects the evolution of southern architectural styles, from the Middle Ages to the modern era.
