Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre de Bernay, located in Bernay-Vilbert in Île-de-France, has its origins in the Middle Ages, more precisely in the twelfth century. According to the sources, it was built on the remains of a Merovingian chapel, although no visible trace of it remains today. The construction of the present building began in the second half of the 12th century and ended around 1250, marking a pivotal period in medieval religious architecture.

Over the centuries, the church underwent several phases of development. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, architectural changes were made, while the 17th and 18th centuries saw transformations mainly dedicated to interior decoration. A complete restoration was undertaken at the end of the 19th century, giving the building some of its original brilliance. The cemetery, once located around the church, and the tree of Liberty planted in 1831 by General de Lafayette add a historical and symbolic dimension to the site.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 8 June 1914, Saint Peter's Church has been subject to extensive protection, including its parvis, registered since 13 January 2009. These preservation measures underline its heritage and cultural importance. The building, owned by the municipality, remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the region, reflecting the artistic and social evolutions of its time.
