Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Beylongue Church is a Catholic building located in the Landes department in New Aquitaine. Dating from the early twelfth century, it is distinguished by its medieval architecture, including a nave, two apsides and a bell tower-donjon. These features are a typical example of Romanesque churches in the region, marked by their simplicity and robustness.

The church has undergone several restorations over the centuries, notably in 1868 under the direction of the departmental architect Alexandre Ozanne. This work was designed to preserve its structure while adapting the building to the cultural needs of the time. Its designation as historic monuments in 1996 reflects its heritage value and its importance in local history.

Like many rural churches, Saint-Pierre de Beylongue played a central role in the community life of Beylongue. It served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, reflecting the social and religious organization of the region. Churches of this type were often associated with agricultural and artisanal activities, rhythmizing the daily life of surrounding villages.
