Origin and history

The Saint-Pierre de Bois church, located in the Charente-Maritime department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a religious building emblematic of Saintonge's Romanesque style. Built in the 12th century, it illustrates the ecclesiastical architecture of this period, characterized by stone walls assembled in large apparatus and a sober but elegant decoration. Its western portal, adorned with five vestures and flanked by columns, as well as its facade structured in three registers, testify to the mastery of the Romanesque artisans in monumental sculpture and the balance of proportions.

In the 14th century, the church was enriched with two side chapels, slightly changing its initial plan while maintaining its stylistic unit. The crossover of the transept, surmounted by a dome on pendants, and the flat bedside pierced by an ogival window with reamping reflect this architectural evolution. The octagonal tower, covered with orange tiles and pierced with curved bays, dominates the building and serves as a landmark in the Saintonge landscape. Its classification as historic monuments in 1907 underscores its exceptional heritage value.

Inside, the nave and choir are organized according to a traditional plan, while the lateral niches of the facade and archatures of the median register provide a decorative richness typical of the Saintongeese novel. The church, owned by the municipality of Bois, remains a place of worship and a major testimony to the religious and artistic history of the region. Its state of conservation and its precise location (2 Square Frère Jean Pierre Masson) make it a site accessible to visitors interested in medieval heritage.

The Saintongeese Romanesque style, of which Saint-Pierre de Bois is a remarkable example, is distinguished by its moderate sculptural appearance, its massive volumes and its adaptation to local materials, such as limestone. This regional trend, influenced by the major artistic homes of Poitou and Aquitaine, has long-standing marked the religious landscape of Charente-Maritime, where many rural churches share similar characteristics.
