Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Bougneau Church is a Catholic building located in the department of Charente-Maritime, New Aquitaine. Its initial Romanesque construction dates back to the late 11th century, with a nave built in the 12th century. The church underwent later transformations, especially during the Gothic and classical periods, as evidenced by its Gothic facade adorned with a polylobed portal.

The church architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. The choir, rectangular on the outside, ends with a semicircular apse inside, adorned with two levels of superimposed arcatures. The square bell tower, located on the right span of the choir, presents two levels of Romanesque bays, each floor being slightly down from the previous one. The nave, with a single northern collateral, houses many carved capitals.

The building was classified as historic monuments in 1913 and registered in 2000. This dual protection underscores its heritage and architectural importance. The carved capitals and stylistic changes reflect the artistic and religious evolutions of the region throughout the centuries.
