Église Saint-Pierre (cad. AB 176): Order of 21 December 1972
Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre de Château-Chalon is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Château-Chalon, in the Jura department, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Its origins date back to the early 12th century, with an alleged foundation in 1134. This monument illustrates medieval religious architecture, while bearing traces of subsequent evolutions, including an elevation of the bell tower in the 16th century.
In the 16th century, the church underwent notable changes, including the elevation of its bell tower. The chapel Saint-Thiebaut, now used for baptismal backgrounds, bears the date of 1571, testifying to work carried out at that time. In the 18th century, major transformations took place: the apse and the original apsidioles were destroyed, the choir was restored, and a new apse was rebuilt, marking an adaptation of the building to the liturgical tastes and needs of the time.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 21 December 1972, the Saint-Pierre church is now owned by the commune of Château-Chalon. This ranking underscores its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. The building remains a testament to the stylistic and functional evolution of rural churches in Franche-Comté, from the Middle Ages to the modern era.
