Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Gémil Church is a Catholic church located in the village of Gamil, Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. This monument is particularly known for its 12th century Romanesque portal, the only element explicitly mentioned as protected by the Historical Monuments. The building was included in the inventory of historical monuments in 1929, specifically for this portal, which constitutes an architectural testimony of Romanesque art in the region.

Gemil, like many villages in Haute-Garonne, is part of a historical context marked by a rural and religious life structured around the parish church. The churches of that time served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the community, playing a central role in the social and spiritual life of the inhabitants. The Romanesque portal, typical of this period, reflects the symbolic and artistic importance attached to these buildings, often built or embellished by local lords or religious communities.
