Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de Juicq, located in the Charente-Maritime department in New Aquitaine, is a monument dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Its architecture blends Romanesque elements, such as the western gate in the middle of the hangar decorated with ring capitals, and Gothic additions, visible notably in the choir windows and hooked capitals. These characteristics illustrate the stylistic transitions of the medieval era in this region.

The western portal, dating from the 12th century, is distinguished by its four squares framed by an archvolt with a point of diamonds, resting on columns with capitals decorated with three successive rings. The choir, remodeled in the 13th century, features narrow windows flanked by columnettes and hooked capitals, while remains of vaults (shape and cross-sections of lost dogives) testify to a more complex initial structure. These architectural details reflect the evolution of construction techniques and artistic influences between the two centuries.

Ranked a historical monument by decree of 22 August 1949, the Saint Peter church is now owned by the municipality of Juicq. Its inscription among protected monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. The facade, pierced openings for the bell, and preserved interior elements offer an overview of the religious and artisanal practices of the medieval period in Poitou-Charentes.
