Origin and history
The Saint-Pierre de La Haie-Traversaine Church, also known as the Church of Saint Vierge, is a Catholic religious building located in the village of La Haie-Traversaine, on the edge of the departmental road 23. This village belongs to the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. The church is distinguished by its structure in the shape of a Latin cross, characteristic of the ecclesiastical constructions of this period, as well as by its vaulted ceiling in lattis, a traditional technique of visible structure.
The history of this monument was marked by its construction in 1846, under the direction of Gabriel Tripier de Lozé. The latter, although little documented in the available sources, is identified as the main contractor of this building. Inside, the wooden altar of the St. Lawrence Chapel, now preserved in one of the transepts, bears witness to a preserved furniture heritage. The church is part of the local religious landscape, linked to the diocese of Laval, and reflects 19th century rural Christian architecture in Mayenne.
The site is referenced in heritage works, such as Heritage of the municipalities of Mayenne (ed. Flohic 2002), which highlights its historical and architectural importance. Its inclusion in the list of churches in the department and its attachment to the diocese of Laval confirm its role in the spiritual and community life of the region. The building also illustrates the dynamics of religious construction during the 19th century, a period of renewal for French rural churches.
