Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de La Hérie is a religious building located in the village of La Hérie, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, it is part of the local architectural landscape, marked by fortified churches characteristic of the Thierache, a border area historically exposed to conflict.

The church was listed as historic monuments by order of 14 June 1989, thus recognizing its heritage value. It is owned by the commune of La Hérie and appears in the base Mérimée under the cadastral reference AB 145. Its exact address, 18 Rue Maurice Brugnon, allows to locate it precisely in the village.

The churches of that period played a central role in the lives of rural communities. They served not only as places of worship, but also as refuge in case of danger, reflecting the protection needs of local populations. In the Thierache, these buildings were often reinforced to resist frequent incursions and wars in this border area between the Kingdom of France and neighbouring territories.
