Origin and history

The Saint-Pierre de Lanouée church, located in the Morbihan department in Brittany, is a Catholic building dating back to the 13th century. Although preserving some Romanesque remains, notably in the western walls of the nave and the south wall, it was almost entirely rebuilt in the 18th century. This major overhaul involved the nave, the north side, the bell tower (dated 1757), and the sacristy, installed in the old treasury. The west gate, redone in the 13th century, and elements of the 15th century, like a north window, testify to its complex architectural evolution.

The church was registered as a historic monument on 1 April 1963, recognizing its heritage value. Its furniture includes three protected objects: a master altar, a altarpiece and a tabernacle of the 17th and 18th centuries, an 18th century reliquary cross, and a 16th century reliquary hand, all classified or protected between 1963 and 1974. The current, heterogeneous structure reflects the different eras of construction and transformation, with additions such as the exterior walk over the building.

The square bell tower, amortized by an arrow, dates from the 18th century and replaces a former western bell tower built in 1720 and then destroyed. Minor reshuffles also took place in the early twentieth century, mainly on the east side. The church, owned by the municipality of Lanouée, thus illustrates almost nine centuries of architectural and religious history in Brittany, from its medieval foundations to its modern transformations.
