Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre de Lemps, located in the village of the same name in Drôme (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is a religious building whose origins date back to the 12th century, with a first mention attested in 1183. The initial architecture, marked by a nave with four vaulted spans and a flat bedside choir, has undergone major transformations over the centuries. The limestone and sandstone turrets, which reserve the stone with frames, bear witness to medieval construction techniques. Significant changes took place, notably after the events of 1380 (the first span was lowered), while the vaults of the choir were rebuilt in the seventeenth century. The southern facade was also modified by adding bays.
In 1830, the nave and choir received a painted decoration, including roses and a cartridge on the triumphal arch, reflecting the artistic tastes of the 19th century. These paintings, still visible today, add an aesthetic and historical dimension to the building. The church, owned by the commune, has been included in the inventory of historic monuments since 31 May 2011, recognizing its heritage value. Its traditional orientation, local materials and successive developments make it a witness to the architectural and religious developments of the region.
The current structure preserves traces of different eras, such as lateral discharge arches serving as foothills or modifications after the 14th century disturbances. The building, open to the public, is managed by the local parish, with a key available from a parish relay. Its recent inscription among the protected monuments underlines the importance of its preservation for future generations, while anchoring its history in the cultural landscape of the Drôme and the former Rhône-Alpes region.
