Saint Peter's Church (Case AD 88): inscription by order of 15 February 1988

Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de Montreuil, located in the Eure-et-Loir department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a religious building built between the 14th and 16th centuries. It is distinguished by a unique nave with no sides and transept, as well as a five-sided choir that seems to go back to the Romanesque era. The rest of the structure, especially the nave, is a testament to a construction largely dated from the 15th century, with notable redevelopments in the 16th century.

In the 16th century, the nave underwent major changes, including the transformation of the bays, the addition of a portal in 1545 on the western facade, and the integration of a Renaissance niche into the south wall. The bell tower, for its part, is a subsequent addition of the seventeenth century. The building preserves remains of 16th-century stained glass windows as well as murals hidden under a coating in the nave. These elements illustrate the architectural and artistic changes that the monument has undergone over the centuries.

The St. Peter's church has been included in the inventory of historic monuments since 15 February 1988, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the commune of Montreuil, it embodies a religious and architectural heritage that is significant for the region. Its history reflects the stylistic transformations and functional adaptations typical of French rural churches between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
