Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-de-Piazza de Luri, located in Haute-Corse, is a historical monument dating back to the late 16th or early 17th century. It would have been built at the site of an earlier medieval church. Its baroque architecture is characterized by a two-level facade rhythmic by pilasters, four niches and a triangular pediment. The polygonal bedside and the five-storey square bell tower, dated from 1595 and adjacent to the south, complete this emblematic ensemble of Corsican heritage.

In 1751 the church was erected as a collegiate church by Pope Benedict XIV, giving the priest the title of archpriest. This period marked an increased religious status, interrupted in 1793 with the abolition of the college. In the 19th century, expansion works (sacristy, collateral) were undertaken from 1836, but abandoned for lack of resources. The interior, structured by a nave and two columns separated by arches in the middle of the hangar, houses six chapels and vaults adorned with trompe-l'oeil paintings, including that of the choir on a golden background.

Classified Historic Monument since 1990 for its church and bell tower, the property belongs to the municipality of Luri. Its baroque style, architectural elements (pillars, pediment, bell tower) and interior decoration (paintings, chapels) illustrate the artistic and religious evolution of Corsica between the 16th and 19th centuries. The location, noted as satisfactory a priori, makes it a point of interest for the study of island heritage.
