Origin and history
The Saint-Pierre de Pierrevert church, located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, is a medieval religious building. Built around the middle of the 12th century, it was initially limited to a small chapel dedicated to the Rosary. Its Romanesque architecture, typical of the period, reflects the construction techniques of the period in this Provençal region. The local population boom then motivated successive extensions, marked by centuries of deviation.
Over the centuries, the church has grown to meet the needs of a growing population. A large nave was added after the 12th century, followed in 1822 by a third nave dedicated to Saint-Roch. These additions, made at different times, have given the building its heteroclite character, mixing various architectural elements. The current 16th-century portal comes from another demolished church and was installed in 1704 to embellish the façade.
The bell tower, an important element of Pierrevert's landscape, consists of four arcades surmounted by an arrow. It houses a major bell, founded in 1810, showing religious and community activity in the early 19th century. The southern facade, adorned with a trilobed pediment and a wrought iron cross, also illustrates the stylistic originality of the building. Partially listed as historic monuments in 1937 (for its portal), the church remains a symbol of local heritage.
The registration of the Historic Monuments Portal, by order of 27 October 1937, underlines its heritage value. This portal, which comes from another place of worship that is now gone, embodies the reuse of architectural elements, a common practice in the history of religious buildings. The Saint Peter church, owned by the commune, continues to play a central role in the life of Pierrevert, both spiritually and culturally.
