Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de Pleudaniel is a religious building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Côtes-d'Armor, Brittany. Built in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its bell tower, partially listed as historical monuments since 26 December 1927. This bell tower houses a carved wooden door, a remarkable element of its architectural heritage.

The church was originally dedicated to Saint Guinien, but its history is marked by historical confusion. A local legend attributes its foundation to Saint Arnec, bishop of Illy, although this hypothesis is contested because of a probable confusion with the commune of Ploudaniel, located in Finistère. This error would come from a shell in the book Life of the Blessed and Saints of Brittany, published in 1839 by Malo-Joseph de Garaby.

The monument is today a testimony of the religious architecture of Brittany of the eighteenth century. Although only the structure of the bell tower is protected, the church remains an emblematic place of Pleudaniel, linked to local community and spiritual life. Its central location, Place de la Mairie, reinforces its role in the town's urban and historical landscape.
