Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Poursac Church is a Catholic building located in the village of Poursac, Charente (New Aquitaine). Its origins date back to the 12th century, as evidenced by its nave, its transept to false cross, its choir with right span and its apse, as well as its facade. A fire dating from the late 11th or early 12th century is embedded in the southern wall of the nave, highlighting its medieval heritage. These Romanesque elements constitute the historical heart of the monument, reflecting the construction techniques and artistic style of the period in Poitou-Charentes.

By the mid-16th century, the church underwent a significant expansion of its nave, marking a period of architectural transformation linked to the liturgical and demographic evolutions of the Renaissance. This redesign illustrates the adaptation of religious buildings to the changing needs of local communities, while maintaining traces of earlier times. The restoration campaigns carried out between 1885 and 1905 preserved and enhanced this hybrid heritage, combining Romanesque and Renaissance.

The building is recognized for its heritage value, as evidenced by its two inscriptions as historic monuments. The 12th century fire, embedded in the south wall, is protected by decree of 26 April 1938, while the church as a whole, including its parcellar frame (cadastre B 365), is inscribed on 24 October 1997. These legal protections underline the historical and architectural importance of the site, now owned by the commune of Poursac.

The location of the church on 8 Rue de l'Église makes it a central point of the village, both geographically and symbolically. Its approximate address, derived from GPS coordinates, and its Insee code (16268) clearly links it to the Charente, in the former region Poitou-Charentes, now integrated into the New Aquitaine. These administrative details complement the understanding of its territorial anchor and its role in the local heritage.
