Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre de Pray, located in the Loir-et-Cher department, is a religious building whose major work dates back to the 12th century. It consists of a rectangular nave extended by a flat bedside choir. Two large arched bays, decorated with flamboyant fillings, were added in the 15th century on the southern wall of the nave. The side walls house early 16th-century murals, rediscovered in 1926. The building once belonged to Marmoutier Abbey, highlighting its historical and religious importance in the region.

On November 7, 1480, King Louis XI made a pilgrimage to Pray and stayed there when he wrote a letter thanking his generals for the offerings received. This document attests to the site's reputation in medieval times. The church was registered as historic monuments by order of 26 September 2007, thus recognizing its heritage value. Today it is owned by the municipality of Pray and retains remarkable architectural and artistic elements, witness to its evolution throughout the centuries.

The changes made in the 15th century, such as the flamboyant bays, reflect the stylistic transformations of the era, while the 16th century murals illustrate the importance of religious decoration in rural churches. These elements, combined with its history linked to Louis XI and the Abbey of Marmoutier, make the Saint-Pierre church an emblematic monument to the heritage of Centre-Val de Loire.
