Key figures

M. Leroy - Local teacher and historian Author of a monograph (1880)

Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de Saint-Pierre-lès-Franceville, located in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region, is a religious building built mainly in the sixteenth century, although its Romanesque portal comes from a medieval reuse. It is characterized by a brick architecture, with the exception of this western gate, and includes a nave flanked by collaterals, a transept adorned with vitrified brick lozenges, and a choir disoriented from the nave. The four-storey bell tower shows traces of murderers, suggesting a secondary defensive function, although the fortification elements remain discreet. The stylistic homogeneity of the building makes it a representative example of the churches rebuilt in the Renaissance in the Vervins region.

The inscription of the church as historical monuments in 1989 underscores its heritage value. Its plan and architectural details, such as octagonal pile arches separating the nave from the collaterals or the mortals pierced at the height of man, reflect both liturgical concerns and local adaptations, possibly linked to regional disturbances. The comparison with the church of Vervins, mentioned in the sources, reinforces its historical and artistic interest. Although the detailed archives, such as Mr. Leroy's (1880) monograph, offer an exhaustive description, the elements available today highlight his role both spiritual and community in the village.

The location of the building, at 12 Rue Verte, and its membership in the municipality (code Insee 02688) confirm its territorial anchor. The municipal property and the potential opening to the visit, although not specified, suggest accessibility for visitors interested in the religious and architectural heritage of Hauts-de-France. The available sources, including Wikipedia, Monumentum and the Merimée base, provide additional resources to further study this emblematic monument of Aisne.
