Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Sers Church is a Catholic church in the Charente department, in the commune of Sers in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the 12th century, it is representative of the Romanesque architecture of this period, with a unique nave and a semicircular apse. The building was classified as historic monuments in 1970, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.

The church was initially under the direct collation of the bishops of Angoulême, who received it in 1110. It consists of two side chapels added in the thirteenth century, one of which served as a burial place for the lords of Planchemesnier and the other for the lords of Nanteuil. The plan of the church is rectangular, with a bell tower erected on the square of the transept, covered with a dome on trunks. The apse, arched in cul-de-four, completes this emblematic structure.

The monument, owned by the municipality of Sers, is located at the following address: 5020 Place de l'Église, 16410 Sers. Its classification in 1970 preserved its architectural features, including its semicircular apse and its transept covered with a dome. These elements are a remarkable example of the Romanesque religious heritage in Poitou-Charentes, now integrated into the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
