Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de Taden, located in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany, is a building built in the 14th century, having undergone major modifications in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is distinguished by its elongated plane, flat bedside, and two side chapels. A porch precedes the entrance, while an octagonal bell tower dominates the nave. Contemporary stained glass windows and interior simplicity contrast with the remains of painted decorations discovered between 2003 and 2017, dating from the 14th to the 18th centuries. These frescoes, including a rare representation of 14th century Christ, testify to the historic richness of the site.

The first mention of a church dedicated to St Peter in Taden dates back to a charter of 1121, confirming his gift to the Abbey of Marmoutiers. The present building, of Gothic origin, is attested by a papal bubble of 1387 evoking the construction of a chapel by Geffroy de Quédillac. The bays of the nave and lateral chapels, as well as the western door of the southern chapel, date from this period. In the 16th century, decorated carved decorations inspired by Breton gables were added to the southern chapel. The coat of arms of the Ferré and Quedillac families, painted in the 16th century, recall the local seigneurial alliances.

In the 17th century, a sacristy was added to the northern chapel, and the coat of arms of Raoul Marot, Viscount of Taden, were integrated into the facade. After revolutionary degradation, the church was restored throughout the 19th century, notably under the direction of Théophile Adam between 1873 and 1880. Recent works, such as the 2017 restoration, have revealed unprecedented painted decorations, including seigneurial liters and false appliances from the 14th to the 19th century. The church, registered as a historical monument in 2012, illustrates nearly nine centuries of Breton religious and architectural history.
