Church (cd. ZN 28): registration by decree of 21 June 1971

Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de Treilles-en-Gâtinais, located in the Loiret department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a religious building whose oldest parts date back to the 13th century. The nave, probably later, was reshaped in the 16th century, while the two sides were abolished in the 19th century, when a sacristy was added against the bedside. The building is characterized by a single, ceiling nave, extended by a narrower choir and a circular bedside, both vaulted on dogive crosses. A slate-covered bell tower overcomes the span of the choir, while the roofs mix slates for the nave and local tiles for the choir.

Inside, the base of the chorus span carries an arching on columns decorated with foliage capitals. The church, owned by the commune, has been listed as historical monuments since 21 June 1971 by ministerial decree. Its architecture reflects the stylistic and functional evolutions experienced over the centuries, from the Middle Ages to the modern era, while preserving prominent Gothic elements such as vaults on dogive crosses.

The location of the church, in the heart of the village of Treilles-en-Gâtinais, makes it a central part of the local heritage. Gâtinais, a historical region at the crossroads of Orléanais and Burgundy influences, has seen the development of many medieval religious buildings, often redesigned in later periods to adapt to liturgical needs and architectural tastes. These churches, like Saint Peter, bear witness to the community and spiritual life of the French countryside, where they served both as places of worship, gathering and sometimes as refuge.

The materials used, such as the slates for the nave and the local tiles for the choir, illustrate the resources available in the region and traditional construction techniques. The current absence of low-sides, abolished in the 19th century, may reflect aesthetic or practical choices of the time, such as simplifying interior volumes or clarifying liturgical space. The frame bell tower, typical of many rural churches, emphasizes an economic and functional approach, favouring lightness and ease of maintenance.

The inscription of the church in the inventory of historical monuments in 1971 underscores its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. The protected elements, referred to as the "ZN 28" cadastre, include the entire building, thus preserving a testimony of the different periods of construction. Today, the church of Saint Peter remains a symbol of the religious and architectural heritage of the Loiret, open to visit and anchored in the life of the commune.
