Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Ville-Issey Church is a Catholic building located in Euville, Meuse department (Great East). It is distinguished by its architecture combining Lorrain and Tuscan influences, the fruit of a history linked to the cultural exchanges between Lorraine and Italy in the 18th century. The older choir dates back to the 16th century, while the nave and bell tower were later added, reflecting various artistic styles.

The nave, built in 1741, is the work of Nicolas Pierson, architect of the order of the Premontrés, known for his achievements in the region. The interior decoration of the Rocaille style was designed by Nicolas Jadot, architect of the courtyard of Lorraine, who also marked the building by his Tuscan bell tower (1777), decorated with bosses and urns. The latter, with its lantern and its characteristic bulb, bears witness to the passage of the Lorrains into Tuscany during the reign of Duke Francis III.

Classified as a Historic Monument in 1997, the church also includes the wall of the old adjacent cemetery. Its protection covers the entire building (cadastre AD 11), emphasizing its heritage importance. Architectural materials and forms, such as the enhanced foothills, illustrate the local know-how and European influences of the time.

The furniture and interior fittings, made in the 1740s, complete this historical picture. The church remains a remarkable example of 18th-century religious art in Lorraine, mixing cult and transalpine artistic heritage. Its exact address, 3 Place de l'Église in Ville-Issey, makes it a central point in the village of Euville.
