Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre de Villons-les-Buissons, located in the Calvados department in Normandy, is a Catholic building whose oldest parts date back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Although an earlier building probably existed as early as the 12th century, the present building retains elements of these medieval periods, notably in its choir and bell tower, inscribed in historical monuments since 1927. The nave, on the other hand, dates back to the late 15th or 16th century, incorporating re-employments of an older Romanesque portal.
The church bell tower is distinguished by its atypical octagonal shape, a rare architectural peculiarity. A "unequal-sided" tower marks the transition between the nave and the choir, while a southern foothill carries two superimposed sundials, engraved in 1774 and 1804. These details reflect the additions and modifications that have occurred over the centuries, although some repairs, especially in the choir, remain poorly dated according to the observations of Arcisse de Caumont.
Historically, the church was placed under the patronage of the Duke of Normandy, stressing its local importance. Its partial inscription in the historic monuments in 1927 (for the choir and the bell tower) bears witness to its heritage value. Today, the building belongs to the municipality of Villons-les-Buissons and retains traces of its medieval past, despite subsequent transformations.
Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and its precise location in Calvados, near Caen. The exact address, 22 Rue des Buissons, and its Insee code (14758) anchor the church in the Norman landscape, between religious heritage and remarkable architecture.
