Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens de Bouteilles is an emblematic monument located in the commune of Bouteilles-Saint-Sébastien. Dating from the 12th century, it illustrates the medieval religious heritage of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. His name, "Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens", refers to the Christian feast celebrating the liberation of Saint Peter from his chains, thus emphasizing his spiritual and historical anchor.
In the 12th century, rural churches like that of Bottles played a central role in the lives of local communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, often organized around agriculture and crafts. These buildings also reflected the architectural influences of the time, mixing simplicity and religious symbolism.
