Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens de Fossès, located in the commune of Fossès-et-Baleyssac (Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. Its original Romanesque architecture was partially transformed during major works carried out in the late 15th or early 16th century, notably to rebuild the eastern part of the nave, the bedside and the apses. These changes reflect the evolution of tastes and constructive techniques between the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with late Gothic influence.

The church houses an altar with 16th century altar, carved in stone and formerly dedicated to Saint Remede, a local saint invoked to heal epileptics. This furniture, still visible in the south arm of the building, bears witness to the devout practices and popular cults of the time. In the 19th century, the church was equipped with a sacristy and a plaster vault covering the nave and transept, adaptations related to liturgical needs or building maintenance.

Ranked as a historic monument in total by decree of 5 April 2001, the church now belongs to the commune of Fosses-et-Baleyssac. Its inscription underlines its heritage value, mixing medieval heritage and Renaissance elements. The location of the building, about 2 km from the village of Baleyssac by the route des Pépins, makes it a historical landmark in the rural landscape of Girondin.

Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its status as an active Catholic church, although its openness to the public or its tourist vocation is not specified. The Insee code of the municipality (33171) and its attachment to the district of Langon anchor this heritage in the Aquitaine territory, marked by a rich religious and architectural history.
