Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens, located in La Twelve in Dordogne (New Aquitaine), is a Catholic religious building built mainly in the 14th and 15th centuries, with additions in the 16th century. It illustrates the flamboyant Gothic style, marked by architectural elements like a massive 14th century bell tower-porch, pierced with bays and surmounting an ogival portal. Its interior includes a narthex, a 14th century nave, a choir, and four 15th century side chapels, accessible from the nave. A door with spiral staircase leads to the frame and bell tower, while traces of a condemned crypt remain behind the high altar.
The church houses remarkable furniture classified with historical monuments, including a carved stone pulpit dated 1547, a master altar and a stone altar, a funeral slab, and a Gallo-Roman column reused as a benigner. These elements bear witness to its architectural and liturgical evolution, mixing medieval heritage and ancient reuses. The building, owned by the commune, has been listed as historic monuments since 6 January 1927, highlighting its heritage value.
Located at the north-east entrance of the village of La Twelve, on the edge of the departmental road 710, the church is part of the landscape of the central Périgord. Its history reflects local religious and artisanal practices, from its construction to its later development, while preserving remains of earlier periods, such as the Gallo-Roman column. Its architecture and furniture make it a major witness to the religious heritage of the Dordogne.
