Origin and history

Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens Church is a Catholic church located in Marquay, Dordogne department, New Aquitaine region. Dating from the Middle Ages, it illustrates Romanesque architecture with a polygonal bedside and transept arms finished with rounded parts. The dome, placed above the bell tower at the cross of the transept, rests on multi-projected piles, while the nave vaults and the high parts of the walls are more recent additions.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 8 October 1910, this church belongs to the commune of Marquay. His Romanesque plan, marked by a prominent transept and a central dome, reflects medieval construction techniques. The biased walls closing the arms of the transept and the structure of the bell tower bear witness to an architectural adaptation typical of the rural churches of this period.

The building, a communal property, has preserved protected elements since its classification in 1910. Although some parts such as the vaults of the nave are modern, the church remains a representative example of the Romanesque religious heritage in Périgord Noir. Its location in the Sarlat-la-Canéda district reinforces its anchoring in a territory rich in historical monuments.
